Students will develop their literal reading comprehension skills by reading, listening to, and interacting with a variety of text types.

Example Lessons:

• The Alphabet (Phonics) - Students will practise reading the letters of the alphabet and practise recognition.
• This is my green eraser! - Students will develop their language skills by reading, and listening to, a picture story in which some possessive pronouns are used. They will also become familiar with the questions: 'What's this?' and 'What's that?'
• She screamed loudly! - Students will read and understand a short newspaper article using the past tense. They will answer comprehension questions and practise identifying and using adverbs and expressions of past time.
• Be safe at the beach this summer! - Read and understand a safety pamphlet for Australian beaches.

Students increase and use new words and learn how to identify and use figurative language.

Example Lessons:

• Basic Dictionary Use - On completion of the lesson the student will be able to find words arranged alphabetically and identify word meanings in the dictionary.
• Antonyms and Synonyms - On completion of the lesson the student will be able to identify and use antonyms and synonyms.
• Vocabulary Development - On completion of the lesson the student will be aware of overused words and able to use more appropriate words - got, said etc.
• Similes and Metaphors - On completion of the lesson the student will be able to identify and use similes and metaphors.

Students learn to use correct punctuation.

Example Lessons:

• Punctuation - Sentence Endings - On completion of the lesson the student will be able to use full stops, question marks, exclamation marks and capital letters correctly.
• Commas 1 - On completion of the lesson the student will be able to use commas: to list, to make meaning clear and when writing the date.
• Apostrophe - Possession - On completion of the lesson the student will be able to use the apostrophe of possession appropriately.
• Quotation Marks - On completion of the lesson the student will be able to use quotation marks for direct speech.

Students learn to identify and use various parts of speech.

Example Lessons:

• Common Nouns - On completion of the lesson the student will be able to identify common nouns and demonstrate that common nouns name objects, animals or things.
• Adverbs - On completion of the lesson the student will be able to identify and use adverbs with an understanding that an adverb modifies a verb.
• Prepositions - On completion of the lesson the student will be able to identify and use prepositions correctly.
• Gerunds - On completion of the lesson the student will be able to identify and use gerunds.

Students learn various techniques to improve their spelling.

Example Lessons:

• Spelling - 'Look Say Write' - On completion of the lesson the student will be able to use the 'Look, Say, Write' method for learning spelling, plus 300 spelling words.
• Vowels - Long and Short - On completion of the lesson the student will be able to identify long and short vowel sounds and understand their influence in spelling.
• Prefixes - On completion of the lesson the student will be able to identify and use prefixes.
• Plurals 2 - On completion of the lesson the student will be able to form plurals with special rules: words ending in 'y' and 'f'.

Students will learn to use words correctly and structure their sentences correctly.

• Adjectives-Comparatives & Superlatives - On completion of the lesson the student will be able to identify and use comparative and superlative adjectives.
• Verbs - Tense - On completion of the lesson the student will be able to identify and use the correct tense of verbs: past, present and future.
• Case - Nouns and Pronouns - On completion of the lesson the student will be able to identify the case of nouns, pronouns and adjectives.
• Common Errors eg to/two/too - On completion of the lesson the student will be able to identify and eliminate some common errors in spelling and punctuation.

Students will learn how to improve their writing skills.

Example Lessons:

• Phrases - On completion of the lesson the student will be able to identify and use phrases including adjectival and adverbial phrases.
• Sentence Improvement - On completion of the lesson the student will be able to construct expressive sentences, by using adjectives, adverbs, phrases and clauses.
• Verbs - Active and Passive voice - On completion of the lesson the student will be able to identify and use active and passive voice.
• Essay Writing 2 Text Types - On completion of the lesson the student will be able to recognise the elements needed in writing different types of essays.
